Move Social Causes Through Your Art

Last week a number of us participated in a Creative Capital webinar with nationally renowned artist and advocate Stephanie Bleyer of Six Foot Chipmunk. Immediately taken by her energy and passion for advancing social causes through her work, I was continually impressed by her ideas. I’ve seen some great examples of creative film being used to advance causes on the Daily DoGooder (if you’re not familiar, it cheers up my inbox each day), but Stephanie really got to how it’s all done from the ground up.

The multifaceted role of the arts and health in Cleveland: How can the city’s arts and culture sector citizens benefit?

As a recently appointed Research Fellow at CPAC, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in an exploration of the fusion of arts and health. The project, which involves conducting research for a white paper on Cleveland’s arts and health combinations, has been a real eye-opener for me. Through the research, I have gained firsthand knowledge of the opportunities presented by Cleveland’s well-known health sector and its vibrant arts and culture scene.

For anyone who has ever experienced or been involved in the creation of art, it would come as no surprise because of the calming, therapeutic and transformative effect the arts can provide. The blending of arts and culture activities with the healthcare field produces powerful accounts of the way the arts can impact individuals beyond what standard medical practice can give.
